Delirious and Duped in Dallas

After recovering from our delirium on Wednesday morning, we met my brother-in-law's brother, Francisco, for coffee.  His wife had arranged for our wonderful room in the Fairfield Inn.

Then we headed for breakfast! I had read about a place that specialized in souffles and it sounded amazing.  We arrived at about 10:05am to find out that it doesn't open until 11am.  With 660 miles or so to drive that day, it wasn't going to happen. I felt deflated! Frantic Googling (which ended up making Kristen carsick) led us to Bread Winners Cafe and Bakery.  It was in a nice upscale neighborhood several miles away.  They served our delicious Tex-Mex breakfast with great efficiency.  But it wasn't quick enough: we returned to our car to find a parking ticket.  Apparently, we were in a loading zone.  How could that be?  Turns out, the signs in Dallas are cryptic and we hadn't cracked the code yet.  A nice nearby parking attended let us know that he tried to argue with the officer but was unsuccessful.

We swung by a barbecue place called "Off the Bone" to get me some Texas ribs to go.  I enjoyed the beans and the sauce for the ribs was a bit tangy with a nice amount of heat. And it certainly came clean off the bone.  But it had a texture more like ribs made in a slow cooker--it didn't have the caramelized crunchy bits on the outside I crave in ribs.

I couldn't figure out if Dallas has any recognizable "downtown" because we never passed through one.  The city seemed to be spread out, and the looping freeways were extremely confusing and annoying.  There was never a time when you could feel comfortable in a lane because before you knew it, the road curved off into a route of a different name.

The next leg of our journey was across the wide open spaces of Texas.  Cows, trucks, trains, donkey, tumbleweeds, oil, sunset, "Quality Beef" stench, snow.

Yes, that is a snowball!

Still a long way to go today...

There was a good hour or two that we spent driving through New Mexico where there was almost no sign of life.  And that happened to coincide with the temperature gauge reading somewhere between 13 and 20 degrees.  Even across Texas there were a number of little towns and rest areas. We made it safely, so that Kristen could do this:
